External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Saturday underlined Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strong commitment to India’s partnership with the United States, noting that Modi shares a warm personal equation with US President Donald Trump.

“PM Modi attaches enormous importance to our partnership with the US. As far as President Trump is concerned, he has always had a very good personal equation with him. But the point is that we remain engaged with the US, and at this time, I can’t say more than that,” Jaishankar told ANI.

His remarks came shortly after PM Modi responded to Trump’s comments on India-US ties, describing the partnership as “forward-looking” and built around a “Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership.”

Taking to X, PM Modi wrote: “Deeply appreciate and fully reciprocate President Trump’s sentiments and positive assessment of our ties. India and the US have a very positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership.”

Trump, during an announcement at the White House on Friday, called India-US ties a “very special relationship,” adding that he and PM Modi would always be friends, though he expressed reservations about some of Modi’s recent policies.

“I’ll always be friends with Modi. He’s a great Prime Minister. But I just don’t like what he is doing at this particular moment. Still, India and the United States have a very special relationship. There is nothing to worry about,” Trump said.

He also addressed concerns raised on his Truth Social post about “losing India and Russia to China,” clarifying that he did not believe this was the case, though he voiced disappointment over India’s oil purchases from Russia.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reiterated the strategic depth of the bilateral relationship. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said: “This relationship between the United States and India is very important for us. Both our countries share a comprehensive global strategic partnership, anchored in shared interests, democratic values and strong people-to-people ties. We remain focused on the substantive agenda and hope the relationship continues to grow on the basis of mutual respect and shared interests.”
